See + Do

So you’d like to visit the county for the weekend and you’re looking for a few things to see and do that might not involve wine?

Here are our thoughts and impressions of great sites to see around the county.

Loch Sloy

What is Loch Sloy? It was formerly Camp Picton and was used by the Royal Air Force to train British, Canadian and American men as combat pilots in the 1940’s. It was abandoned for many years and now serve as a Business Park where you’ll find art galleries, yoga studios, gyms and storage facilities. Many of the buildings are still empty, have not been updated and are quite frankly slowly collapsing. That’s actually what’s so cool about this site about this place. You can drive your car up and down the old barracks to see the beauty in these old buildings. If you’re and amateur or professional photographer bring your camera as there will be lots to take in. The Loch Sloy site is currently for sale for $15.6 mill in case you have a few spare shingles.

Sandbanks Provincial Park

If you want to see a beach that makes you think you’ve gone to the Caribbean, then Sandbanks Provincial Park is your place. Walk through the dunes. Take a walk or go for a run along the beach or walk on the sand bar. A visit to the Sandbanks beach will have you scratching your eyes with disbelief that you are still in Ontario. Lineups can be 1-4 hours to get into the park during high season so borrow one of our passes so you can skip the line and head to the beach!

A visit to the County simply isn’t complete without meandering through the shops in Bloomfield, Picton or Wellington. You’ll have the opportunity to see local artist’s paintings and pictures and buy unique items for your home. Make sure you visit the home of the Barn Quilts when in Bloomfield. You’ll start to notice that many of the buildings in the County of a distinct Barn Quilt hanging on the exterior of the building.

On the way to Waupoos is the fames Lake on a Mountain. It’s considered a natural wonder because you have a large lake at the top of a mountain and it doesn’t appear to have a visible source of water. The lake is located 62 metres above the Bay of Quinte. Visit some of the restaurants close to Lake on a Mountain for spectacular views of Picton Bay.

The Glenora Ferry shuttles cars and passengers from Kingston to the County at no charge. It provides an excellent viewing deck for the beautiful scenery you’ll find. The ferry runs regularly every 30 minutes.

The PEC Lavender Farm is located close to Closson Chase Winery and offers many lavender products, soaps, plants, essential oils all with the relaxing essence of Lavender. At the beginning of July they host a Lavender Festival where everyone can enjoy the beauty of the purple fields.

Don’t forget to visit the Alpaca farm, Shed Chetwyn Farms. Not only can you purchase warm socks, scarves & cardigans in their modern day farm shop but you can also try doing yoga with the Alpacas.

The County offers many unique areas to explore based on your tastes. A visit to the Prince Edward County site will give you some more ideas on things to See & Do in the County.
