Eat + Drink
So you have 3 days in the County (as the locals call it) and you’re wondering what you should eat and what you should drink? That’s easy, well maybe not so easy as there are so many options of things to eat & drink in the county.
Here is a suggested itinerary:
Day One of your arrival
Enjoy dinner and drinks at the County Canteen (279 Main Street) a short walk from the Mary Street Guesthouse. Make sure you make a reservation so you can get a great table and have a spot to hang out when the evening’s entertainment starts as they don’t allow people to just hang out at the bar.
Day Two of your stay
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at your own pace by visiting the Vic Cafe or Miss Lily’s Café on Main Street. For lunch head to Parsons Brewing for guacamole, chips and tasty flights of beer.
After lunch head to the Rosehall Run Vineyards and make sure while your sampling that you enjoy their sparkling Pixie wine and buy some bubbly to take home with you.
Then drive over to Wellington to sample the wines Keint-He Winery & Vineyards. Then finish off your day of sampling by heading back to Picton and visiting the Black Prince Winery & Canadian Cellars for my wine sampling AND vinegar sampling. They have the finest vinegars in the county. Make sure you purchase some bottles to take home with you too.
For your evening’s festivities, call a taxi & head over to the Agrarian Bistro & Bar for a great dinner. And if you’re looking for drinks post dinner, head downstairs to their Speakeasy for live music. Or if you’re looking for a more lively evening, head over to The Hayloft Dancehall (owned by the Toronto’s Dakota Tavern) where you’ll find dancing and a live band or a DJ. You can take a taxi there or hop on one of the shuttles they provide around the County.
Day Three of your stay
Enjoy your leisurely breakfast and start your day at noon at The Grange in Hillier. The Grange provides picnic baskets with cheese, jellies and bread for a light lunch along with great samples of wine. You can also sit by the fire indoors or by the vineyards on a picnic table.
After your picnic lunch, head over to Karlo Estates in Wellington and be sure to sample their white port if they have it available. It’s so popular that it sells out.
Then head over to Kinsip House of Spirits, a farm-based, grain-to-glass distillery to sample and learn about their gins, vodkas, whisky, rye, brandy, rum, cassis, bitters and don’t forget about their whisky barrel aged maple syrup. After your spirits sampling you can head over to the Huff Estates Winery & Inn sample the wines and make sure you visit the art gallery and the art installations outdoors.
Head back to the Mary Street Guesthouse to relax and unwind and get prepped from dinner at East & Main, just make sure you’ve made reservations. Located in Wellington, they have excellent food and even provide a basket of readers (glasses), if you need help reading the menu. Once you’ve dined at East & Main, head across the street for a drink at the Drake Devonshire to look at the view and the décor of the Drake Devonshire.
Day Four of your stay
Before you head home, after you’ve packed your bags and head over to the Miller House in Lake on a Mountain for charcuterie and cheese. Sit outdoors and enjoy the spectacular view of the vineyard and the Lake.
Then before you leave town, head to the Loch Sloy Business Park. It was built in 1940 as a training camp for the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. Drive in and take pictures of the deteriorated buildings of the old army barracks. Some of the buildings now house art galleries, gyms and brewing facilities.
Now you’ve had a full weekend in the County. It’s time to head home. Make sure you book your next stay at the Mary Street Guesthouse to visit all of the other wineries & breweries you may have missed. Other great places to visit for great beverages and food include Flame and Smith and the Hinterland Wine Company for beer and wine. A great stop for lunch includes 555 Brewing Co., for great beer try The Judge, and great pizza. And visit the Bloomfield Public House for a great dinner.
And of course there are many more places to visit for great beverages, cocktails and food that we haven’t mentioned but then we’ve left you with something to discover. Please let us know what you find.
